Program Description
Fellows are trained in the clinical skills that are essential for prenatal diagnosis and for the care of higher risk obstetric patients and in research related to maternal-fetal medicine. The clinical training, which is concentrated in the first 18 months of the program, involves learning fetal diagnostic techniques (e.g., ultrasound, echocardiography, amniocentesis, chorionic villous sampling) and experience in managing gravidas with complex medical disorders and obstetrical complication. In the last 6 months of clinical training, the fellow can select clinical rotations that meet their particular interest. The subsequent 18 months of research involves mentored research training. Fellows are encouraged to pursue the Specialized Training and Advanced Research (STAR) Program. The UCLA STAR program provides the opportunity to be trained in basic science (Ph.D. track), health service/outcomes (Ph.D. track), and clinical research (M.S. track). Our fellowship accommodates the requirements of various research training programs by minimizing the clinical activities to no more than 10% of the fellow's time in the second half (18 months) of training. The training program is designed to provide the experience that is critical to the development of a successful academic career in maternal-fetal medicine. To complete your application, our program requires two letters of recommendation; one from your present chief of service and the other from someone who knows you well and can assess your clinical abilities and potential for a career in Maternal-Fetal Medicine. The letters can be mailed, faxed, or e-mailed, please ensure that the name, title, and institutional affiliation of the author appear within the body of the e-mail. No additional material, such as a Dean's letter, medical school transcript, or reprints, is required. Please send your letters of recommendation by July 25, 2008. Unless it is an emergency, please do not call the office to check the status of your application as we do not have the staff to field such a large volume of calls. You will be notified of the status of your application by e-mail. All complete applications will be reviewed with the top applicants being selected for interviews. Interviews are mandatory for candidates under serious consideration for fellowship positions as they allow the candidate to gain the true flavor and character of the program, as well as giving the program an excellent opportunity for assessing the potential of each candidate. Sometime in August, you will be notified by e-mail if you have been chosen for an interview. We anticipate that the interviews will be held in the middle of September. In addition, please remember that it is essential that postdoctoral fellows, who will be involved in clinical work, obtain a California Medicine License once accepted to the program.
