Gynecology

Currently there are five centers where residents operate: UCLA Westwood campus, Olive View Medical Center, Kaiser Lancaster, Kaiser Woodland Hills and Community Memorial Hospital Ventura. In addition, the elective in East Africa provides a unique international surgical experience. A few highlights include:
  • Minimum 80 total abdominal hysterectomies/ resident
  • Minimum 40 trans-vaginal hysterectomies/ resident
  • "Top 10%" for uro-gynecologic procedures
  • Minimum 100 minimally invasive cases/resident including LAVH and exposure to robotic assisted surgery.
  • "Top 30%" of endocrinology and infertility surgery
  • "Top 30%" of gynecologic-oncology cases
  • Dedicated Family Planning rotation
  • Surgical experience in East Africa with exposure to fistula repair.


Obstetrics

Residents participate in labor and delivery care at UCLA Westwood campus and at Olive View Medical center, and are involved in close to 100% of the deliveries at each hospital. In addition, they care for and deliver all obstetrical patients at Kaiser, Woodland Hills. A few highlights include:
  • 4000 vaginal deliveries between June 2005 and June 2006 for all facilities
  • "Top 25%" for operative vaginal deliveries
  • Minimum of 150 cesarean sections/resident
  • 75% of patients are high risk obstetrical patients
  • MFM fellowship - brings in additional exposure to and management of high risk pregnancies


Primary and Preventative Care

All outpatient OB/GYN encounters have allowed residents to adequately meet the requirements for primary and preventative care. This demonstrates the important role of primary health care in obstetrics and gynecology. A sample of primary and preventative care statistics/resident include:
  • 250 Diabetic encounters
  • 330 Hypertensive or cardiovascular encounters
  • 85 Thyroid encounters
  • 110 Dermatology encounters
  • 100 Gastroenterology encounters
  • 95 Respiratory encounters
  • 70 Breast encounters
  • 165 Geriatric encounters
  • 210 Behavior medicine encounters
  • 100 Pediatric or Adolescent encounters
  • 530 Health care maintenance encounters

UCLA Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology continues to demonstrate its excellence in education and training as evidenced by the 100% pass rate on board examinations.
